"A haunted forest" Doesn't it seems like a Hollywood horror movie? But some of them truly exist. Aokigahara forest located in base of Mount Fuji in Japan is one of them. It has been there since the dried lava formed after the Mount Fuji’s eruption in 864. The unusual structure of the twisted roots and denseness of the trees is thought to be attributed to it's unusual volcanic base and since the trees stay green all the year, a stunning scene is created at the foot of the mountain. Very little wildlife lives there, making the forest very little apart from the occasional tweets of birds, and its easy to see why Aokigahara is a magnet for tourism and paranormal enthusiasts.
Who believes the forest
is one of the most haunted locations on the planet. Although
unfortunately, the main reason many visit this forest is not for its appearance
or the two famous and beautiful caves that can be found there but because this
is the number 2 spot in world and number 1 spot in Japan to Commit suicide.
This is strange that as at the forest entrance, there are signs that are
encouraging people with suicidal thoughts to think about their parents,
siblings and children, urging them to talk about their troubles and offering a
suicidal prevention number to dial.
But for most travelers, the
signs go unnoticed as their intentions are to simply walk through the forest
and explore its unusual beauty. Most of the people who go in the forest record
coloured tapes and these tapes also provide some clues for reasons of people committing
suicide . Azusa Hayano, a geologist who has been studying the forest for the
past two decades said that if we follow the tapes, we are most likely to find
something at the end of it. There are many cases of suicide such that
authorities do regular sweeps of the area to collect the bodies and is thought
on an average that as many as two a week commit suicide there.
Usually by hanging,
taking overdose on sleeping pills . Exact number of suicides cannot be
confirmed be here as some bodies are not found until many years later, deep
within the forest. But why people travel here to just commit suicide here? Well
most of them are Japanese businessmen
between the ages of 40 and 50. And March being the month with the greatest
number of suicides each year, the month at which the financial year ends, may
be that business men may suffering financially seems to be the main reason for
their suicide.
But why Aokigahara particularly? Well in 1960, the Japanese
author ,"Seicho Matsumoto" wrote a novel called " Black Sea Of
Trees". The story ends with two lovers committing suicide in the Aokighara
forest and it is believed that his work was so influential that it attributed
to people travelling to the forest to copy the suicide in the book. Another
book was published in 1993 called ''The Complete Suicide Manual" and it
actually recommends Aokigahara as the forest as the perfect place to hang yourself.
Now, there are people who discredit this theory for some reasons. But since
both books have been found with the belongings of a few people in the forest so
this reason cannot be ignored. In the 19th century, it was said that the Japanese people used the forest to abandon elderly, in-firmed family members during the periods of famine carrying them into the forest and leaving them there to die of starvation.
It is said to be the worlds most haunted forest. It's also been reported that white spirits have been seen gliding around the forest and Japanese spiritualists believe the soil and trees are tainted by the corpses of the dead. In Japanese folklore, they believe that Yuri figures that are the result of someone dying an unnatural or violent death haunts the forest. It is also believed that there are high gravitational forces around the forest because of mount Fuji which makes the person unconscious and he commits suicide.
